As technologies and minting techniques develop suppliers and mints are producing ever more advanced coins and precious metal products. To that end, Coin & Mint News™ is beginning a new segment in partnership with CoinsWeekly to highlight new collectible issues that are notable for one reason or another.
This month, we begin with the Perth Mint’s Little Hero Nugget replica, Latvia’s Building the Unbuilt commemorative, and Swissmint’s new gold 25 franc design.
Latvian coins are often bursting with style and distinctive personality. This is especially true of this beautiful coin, which features modernist architectural project sketches by Latvian architect Marta Staņa.
The design of Switzerland’s new 25 franc gold coin seems plain and austere, but there are various references to historical Swiss patterns and issues, including the reverse design inspired by the historic 20 franc gold coin of 1871. This coin is also intended as a prototype for a new annual issue starting in 2026.
When the Perth Mint launched the Nugget bullion coin series in 1986, it depicted various real nuggets on the coins. The replica commemorative coin reminds us of this and adds a charming rose gold gilding as well as a mintmark that celebrates the 125th anniversary of the Perth Mint.
