Sustainable Procurement Meets Coin Manufacturing at MdP

Monnaie de Paris (MdP) has announced the latest initiative to improve the sustainability of circulating coinage, partnering with ArcelorMittal to use its XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel for 1, 2, and 5 euro cent production. This marks the first time that low-carbon steel has been introduced into euro cent coin manufacturing and forms part of the mint’s Ambition 2027 strategy to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50% and advance circular manufacturing.

Underlying the project is a broader recognition that sustainability can no longer be addressed by individual organisations acting alone. In her presentation at the recent Coin Conference, MdP’s Chief Purchasing Officer, Aïcha Nowak, commented that meaningful progress requires collaboration between actors across the industry, effectively turning sustainability into a shared specification alongside technical performance and cost.
