First Sitting US President on Coinage in a Century

The United States Mint has released a new $1 commemorative coin featuring President Donald Trump, making him the first sitting US president to appear on a coin while in office since Calvin Coolidge appeared on a commemorative half-dollar in 1926.

Issued on 2 September 2026 as part of a commemorative programme marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the coin features Trump's portrait alongside the inscriptions 'Liberty' and 'In God We Trust'. The reverse design commemorates the nation's semiquincentennial milestone.

The release fulfils plans first outlined by Treasury officials in 2025 and places Trump among a relatively small number of serving heads of state depicted on their nation's currency. Unlike previous circulating $1 programmes featuring figures such as George Washington, Dwight D Eisenhower, Susan B Anthony and Sacagawea, the new issue has attracted attention because it depicts a president currently in office (see CMN July 2026).
